Meditation for Ulcerative Colitis
Meditation can help with stomach problems and ulcers by unlocking a deep state of rest within the body, allowing restoration of the natural balance of the immune system. It also increases blood flow which aids healing. Meditation has also been clinically shown to reduce the incidence and perception of pain, which can make it very useful for sufferers of gastrointestinal conditions.

The problem
Ulcerative Colitis can affect anybody but it is more likely to strike younger people between 15-25.
It’s a particularly cruel and unpleasant condition which causes pain, bleeding and urgent diarrhea as well as a host of other symptoms including fatigue, inflammation of the joints, anaemia and weight loss.
It can take its toll both emotionally and physically and can often impact work and relationships.
Nobody knows what causes ulcerative colitis for sure, but it’s thought to be a combination of factors including genetic makeup, an abnormal reaction in the digestive system and a trigger like stress, a virus or hormone fluctuations after giving birth.
The one major trigger we can manage is stress, and if we do so, we will be in much better shape to reduce the frequency and severity of flares.
There is no cure for ulcerative Colitis or Crohn’s and many sufferers become subject to a life-time of taking medications with increasing ferocity and serious side effects to try and keep the disease under control.

How it affects you
It is an autoimmune disorder that causes inflammation and ulceration of the rectum and colon.
The immune system mistakes healthy cells for intruders and starts attacking them. As a result ulcers occur on the lining of the colon which bleed and produce mucus.
In the most severe cases the damage can become so bad that it becomes life-threatening and the entire colon has to be removed.

How can Beeja help?
By accessing a super deep state of rest within the body, Beeja meditation helps bring the immune system back into balance. It also increases blood flow which aids healing.
The practice of Beeja meditation has also been clinically shown to reduce the incidence and perception of pain, which can make it very useful for sufferers.
We have some incredible stories from past students of Beeja.
One of our earliest students came to us having been diagnosed with a chronic case indicated by a faecal calprotectin (inflammatory marker) score of 2576. The norm for someone in her age range should be 51. Her doctors told her that a condition this acute would require medications for life.
A year on and, having learned meditation in that time, her inflammatory levels gave a reading of 97 and falling. She is now off the medication and her rather surprised specialist has informed her she is unlikely to experience any further trouble. The lady in question hasn’t made any lifestyle changes beyond those taken long before she came to us and she is convinced the meditation did it.
Whilst this level of healing might not be possible every time, this technique gives you the best chance to resetting your body to a healthier mode, and giving it the opportunity to heal deeply from within.
It can also help sufferers to feel better about themselves by finding self-acceptance and a renewed energy for life which makes the disease easier to cope with.
