Meditation for Fibromyalgia

Curve Curve

Fibromyalgia is a little-understood long-term condition that causes pain all over the body, increased sensitivity to pain, fatigue and problems with memory and concentration (known as "fibro-fog"). Fibromyalgia is exacerbated by, and at least partly caused by, stress. By radically reducing stress Beeja meditation can be really helpful in relieving symptoms.

  • The problem

Whilst not much is known about what causes Fibromyalgia, for sufferers experiencing multiple sore spots around the body, it can be paralysing in its intensity. Yet effective fibromyalgia treatments are hard to come by.

It cannot be reconciled with arthritis, inflammation, or trapped nerves. In recent times, it has been classified as a recognised disorder or syndrome, but the lack of understanding surrounding it means there is still a tendency to label it as just another psychosomatic disorder.

We know that stress is a central precipitating factor – and there are a number of ways in which stress plays a part.

  • How it affects you

Researchers have found that Fibromyalgia is more likely to strike those of us with anxious or neurotic tendencies, after discovering abnormally high levels of activity in the emotional-contextual pain centres of the brain.

People with fibromyalgia are also likely to have a hyperactive sympathetic nervous system, especially at night. Somewhere along the way, our automated programming has been distorted, and the ‘fight or flight’ response has been left on. The sympathetic branch of the nervous system is ticking over at an uncomfortably fast pace, even when resting.

  • How can Beeja help?

Unlike other fibromyalgia treatments, meditation gets to the root cause of anxiety by calming down the amygdala, which releases anxiety-inducing neurochemicals when activated.

The only way to undo hyperactivity of the sympathetic nervous system is to find a tool which can break through this autonomic programming and settle the nervous system to its very deepest level.

Beeja meditation achieves this by using personalised mantras, which have a very soothing, harmonising effect on all aspects of the nervous system. Using this method it’s super easy to break through the automated triggering of the stress response, and the more we practise, the more settled we feel day to day.

The pain receptors in the nervous system begin to repair and rebalance. Not only will our fibro fog clear, but our memory and concentration will be better than ever before.

Our serotonin and dopamine levels, which can make us more likely to experience episodes of anxiety and depression, also tend to right themselves when we meditate.

And, in the meantime, while all these processes are being unwound and restored to their most natural state, Beeja meditation also helps with pain relief.

Our bodies mediate pain using naturally produced built-in opioid or cannabinoid transmitters. Opioid levels in people with fibromyalgia have been found to be fine, so either the receptor sites for these neurochemicals are not working as they should or it is an issue with cannabinoid production and/or receptivity.

There is interesting work going on, looking into artificial cannabinoids as a partial cure for fibromyalgia. But Beeja can help kick-start this process within your body.

Last but not least, Beeja can hugely help sufferers of this condition to cope with the emotional burden of living with a chronic condition that very few other people understand.

“I’d been debating about learning to meditate for a long time. I’d originally tried mindfulness but found that it was too “fiddly” to incorporate into my everyday life. I finally took the plunge three months ago and attended Will’s course. Since then I haven’t looked back, I’ve found the benefits to be amazing. My stress levels have come down, I’m sleeping better than ever before..”
